The best way to get to know Dan is a chin wag over a cuppa, or a glass of something more fortified. He came to Hackney Carriage Driving after careers in Theatre Stage Management and as a Publican. Unusually though, it wasn’t the streets of London where he plied his trade, but Cambridge.
After six years behind the wheel, he rolled the dice again and found himself behind a desk, as an administrator at UGLE, Covent Garden. In 2016 he moved across town to begin work at Mark Masons’ Hall, where he is based today.
The WCHCD opened many doors within the City and he enjoys all aspects of the Livery and associated movements. He’s on the Council of the City Livery Club and Honorary Secretary of their Wine Circle; Beadle to the Worshipful Company of Glaziers, a Deputy Ward Beadle, member of the Walbrook Ward Club, and member of the Guild of Freemen.
Had it not been for the intervention of Covid, 2020 would have been his tenth consecutive Magical Taxi Tour. Dan also enjoys his role as Military Liaison for the WCHCD.
Not one to let the grass grow under his feet, he has many hobbies and interests: playing drums in pub cover bands, wine/whisky/beer (including being on the committee of his local branch of CAMRA, and their annual Beer Festival), cooking, most sports but especially Cricket and Horse Racing, tour guiding, bell-ringing, field sports and dog training. He is also the Treasurer of his local RAF ATC and one of the team of curators of his local former RAF airfield.
Across the pond Dan received Commission as a Kentucky Colonel in 2019 and is proud to be a ‘Guardian of the Groove’ as a supporter of WWOZ New Orleans, where he indulges his passion for New Orleans music.
Despite hardly ever being there, or perhaps because of that, home is where the heart is and he shares life in a sleepy village on the borders of Essex, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire with his partner Lorraine, a gardener at Magdalene College, Cambridge. There they are joined by the last in a long line of four legged friends.
Starting on the Warden’s ladder of the WCHCD, Dan looks forward to meeting other Wardens on their way to their respective Masterships. So do please stop and say hello if you see him out and about.
