I was born in Epsom, Surrey on 14th October 1954. My childhood years were spent in Nunhead (Peckham) London, but now live in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex with my wife Caroline. 1972; On leaving Samuel Pepys Secondary Modern School, I joined Tesco’s as a Trainee Manager and in 1973 I was promoted to acting Assistant Manager of the Rye Lane, Peckham Branch. 1974 I made a career change and enrolled in the London Salvage Corps (L.S.C). I was promoted to the rank of Leading Salvageman in 1980. 1984; the L.S.C. was disbanded. I applied and successfully became a fire fighter with the London Fire Brigade. On successful completion of training, I was posted to A28/G33 Kensington, Blue Watch. I happily stayed there serving as a Fireman/Driver for sixteen years. During my time at Kensington, I studied the ‘Knowledge of London’ and obtained my Green Badge in 1993. This instilled an ongoing interest in the history of London and in 1998 I qualified as a City of London Guide/Lecturer. The following year I qualified as a Clerkenwell & Islington Guide. 2000; I volunteered to become a driver on the annual “Children’s Magical Taxi Tour”, to Disneyland Paris, organised by the Worshipful Company of Hackney Carriage Drivers (WCHCD). To date, I have completed 20 consecutive “Magical Taxi Tours”. 2001; I joined the WCHCD, and became a Liveryman when the Company received livery status in 2004. 2003; I joined the Court of Assistance (CoA) of the WCHCD. After serving on the Honours & Awards committee, I joined the Education committee, becoming Chairman of the Education Committee in 2004. Apart from being Chairman of Education for the WCHCD, I also took over as Course coordinator responsible for running the company’s ‘Cabguide Course’. As a qualified guide myself, the aim of the course was to train already Licenced Hackney Carriage Drivers, to become qualified tour guides. At first the lessons were held at one of London’s leading “Knowledge” schools, but in 2010 I managed to negotiate a move to the Clore Learning Centre based in the Museum of London. Here we have access to state of the art classrooms, and the students have access to the museum galleries for research. 2009; I was elected to the position of Lower Warden on the CoA of the WCHCD. 2010; I attended Hackney Community College, receiving a City & Guilds in Adult Education (PTLLS) 2013/14; I served as Master of the WCHCD 2015; I joined the Worshipful Company of Firefighters (WCoFF), and took Livery in 2016. 2017; I became a member of the CoA of the WCoFF. My interests include, reading, cooking, walking, travel & photography.
